Geopathic Stress

Many holistic practitioners believe that the energy of the land beneath us can influence how we feel physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Geopathic stress refers to areas where natural earth energies are thought to become disturbed through underground water streams, geological faults, or environmental factors. The term geopathic stress comes from the greek word geo meaning earth and pathos meaning disease or suffering. Geopathic stress can be caused from living above the likes of tunnels, sewers, geological faults, pipes, mineral deposits, utility lines and underground water. Underground water flowing beneath the ground creates harmful energy fields that can negatively affect human health, sleep or well-being.

People living in these geopathically stressed areas will get a feeling of listlessness and tiredness. These problems only arise once exposed to geopathic stress for an extended period of time. Geopathic stress doesn't cause direct physical illnesses but it does lower the immune system making it harder to recover. People who believe they are affected by geopathic stress often report experiences such as:

  • Poor sleep or frequent waking
  • Persistent fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Headaches
  • Feeling uneasy in certain locations
  • Pets avoiding particular areas of the home
  • Houseplants struggling in specific spots
Animals and other living organisms react differently to geopathic stress. Horses, cows, sheep, pigs and dogs are sensitive to it while cats, bees, wasps and ants are fond of it as are insects, moulds and fungi.

A similar but separate concept to geopathic stress is electromagnetic field radiation (ELF). Causes of this range from household appliances like hair dryers, powerlines and electrons accelerating in antennas such as Wi-Fi routers or TV/radio towers. Scientists agree that ELF are hazardous to human health and are considered carcinogenic and linked to cases of childhood leukemia.

Practitioners may use several methods to assess an area to discover the level of geopathic stress including dowsing rods, pendulums, intuitive sensing mapping underground water courses and electromagnetic field measurements. Assessment methods vary considerably between practitioners, and there is no universally accepted standard for detecting geopathic stress. Insomnia, behavioral problems in children and migraines are just some common indications of geopathic stress and it's a common factor in most serious illnesses and psychological conditions however they don't cause them but reduces ability to fight them.

Those who believe geopathic stress is affecting their home may react differently, for example they'll:
  • Move their bed to a different location
  • Rearrange furniture
  • Spend time observing whether symptoms improve in different rooms
  • Consult a practitioner experienced in environmental assessments
  • Focus on improving overall sleep quality and indoor comfort
Many people also combine these approaches with evidence-based lifestyle habits such maintaining a regular sleep schedule, reducing bedroom noise, limiting screen time before bed and ensuring good ventilation.
